How does minoxidil work?
Minoxidil is a peripheral vasodilator that increases blood circulation to the hair follicles. The hair follicles are supplied with nutrients and oxygen-rich blood, causing the hair to transition from the resting phase to the growth phase, which promotes hair follicle development and the growth of new, thicker hair.
What are the main causes of hair loss in men?
The main cause of hair loss in men is an increase in male hormones. So-called androgenic hair loss involves increased levels of testosterone, which damages hair follicles. Hair on the forehead and crown is sensitive to this hormone, which leads to shedding. It has been proven that this type of baldness affects only genetically predisposed men.
In modern dermatology, hair loss issues occupy a prominent place. Some researchers attribute this to environmental pollution, others to poor lifestyle and nutrition (leading to increased anemia, iron, and ferritin deficiency), while others point to the rise in endocrine disorders and stressful situations (which remains one of the strongest risk factors to date).
How long does it take to see results from minoxidil treatment?
First of all, keep in mind that results vary by individual and depend on the degree of baldness and the underlying causes of hair loss.
Studies have shown that minoxidil begins working immediately. However, you should expect the first visible results in approximately 2 to 4 months. This is because it takes about this long for your hair follicles to return to the anagen growth phase. The initial treatment course is 6 months.
In the meantime, it is important to stay patient and continue using minoxidil even if you do not immediately notice changes in your hair.
What side effects and contraindications can minoxidil have?
Minoxidil is a peripheral vasodilator; it widens blood vessels and increases blood circulation to the hair follicles, which may cause a rapid heart rate. Therefore, it is not recommended for individuals with cardiovascular diseases.
Minoxidil is not a hormonal medication and does not affect testosterone levels.
Overall, 1–2% of men are allergic to minoxidil, which presents as skin irritation and redness. Additionally, 2–3% of users are allergic to propylene glycol, the solvent in minoxidil; in such cases, minoxidil foam is recommended, as it does not contain this substance.
In rare cases when a user exceeds the recommended dose, the incidence of side effects increases.
How long is the course of treatment with minoxidil?
The course of treatment depends on the degree of baldness. In cases of severe baldness, hair restoration may require a minimum treatment course of 8–10 months. In the early stages of baldness, treatment with minoxidil is more effective, with results visible within 2–3 months, and the initial treatment course lasts 6 months. During the treatment period, apply 1 ml of minoxidil twice a day.
To maintain the achieved results after completing the treatment course, it is necessary to continue using minoxidil as maintenance therapy once a day until the age of 40–45. After this age, the production of dihydrotestosterone decreases significantly, thereby reducing its negative impact on hair follicles.
Why does hair loss occur?
The most common cause of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia, which is the primary cause of hair loss in men. Androgenetic alopecia is a type of baldness that occurs when hair follicles are hypersensitive to a male sex hormone (the active form of testosterone).
This sensitivity is genetically determined. For this reason, this type of baldness is considered genetic alopecia triggered by a hereditary predisposition. An excess of androgens (hyperandrogenism) causes hair follicles to shrink, making the hair thin, short, and vellus-like.
Testosterone in the blood is converted into dihydrotestosterone, which then binds to dermal papillae. This activates sensitive genes in the follicles of the frontal and crown areas, leading to hair loss and baldness.
How to use minoxidil?
Apply 1 ml of minoxidil solution twice a day to a dry scalp and skin.
Draw 1 ml with the dropper, apply it to the thinning areas, and massage it thoroughly into the hair roots using your fingers. The skin will completely absorb it in 10 minutes. Do not wash it off. Maintain an interval of at least 8 hours between applications. Minoxidil can also be used as a spray—7 sprays twice a day.
Is it necessary to cut hair short or shave hair/beard when using minoxidil?
Shaving your hair or beard is not necessary, as minoxidil is not applied to the hair or beard itself. It must be rubbed directly into the skin surface where hair is falling out and where you want to stimulate hair or beard growth and thickness.
Do you guarantee that the treatment will be effective and I will get the desired result?
Based on studies, minoxidil has shown a 90% efficacy rate, indicating that treatment was ineffective in 10% of men.
Keep in mind that any medication acts individually, and results depend on many factors: genetics, stage of baldness, type of baldness, nutrition, stress, and environmental factors. Proper application, exact dosage, and completing the full course are of great importance.
Minoxidil is the only medication in the world approved and recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through clinical trials as an effective treatment for hair loss.
How long does one bottle of minoxidil last?
One bottle lasts for approximately one month of use.
Do I have to use minoxidil for the rest of my life?
To maintain the achieved results after completing the treatment course, it is necessary to continue using minoxidil as maintenance therapy once a day until the age of 40–45. After this age, the production of dihydrotestosterone decreases significantly, thereby reducing its negative impact on hair follicles.
Dropper or spray: which is more effective?
Using minoxidil with a dropper is more effective because it provides a more accurate dosage. The dropper allows you to distribute the minoxidil solution directly onto the scalp more easily, resulting in better absorption and more effective, timely results.
When using a spray, it is difficult to maintain an exact therapeutic dose (1 ml). Part of the solution disperses into the air and settles on the hair, making it harder to target the scalp surface properly, which reduces the effectiveness of minoxidil.
When is minoxidil foam used?
Minoxidil foam is prescribed when an individual has highly allergic and sensitive skin.
Approximately 2–3% of users are allergic to propylene glycol, the solvent in minoxidil. In this case, minoxidil foam is also prescribed, as it does not contain this ingredient.
